Indicus deciphers India’s most affluent pin codes
In a one-of-its-kind attempt, Indicus has effectively deciphered how ‘affluence’ in India can be gauged at the level of the pin code.
For its attempt to decipher India’s most affluent pin codes, Indicus made use of statistics from a number of sources, including Census 2011, geographic information system (GIS) data, and satellite imagery. In addition, Indicus also collected data with the help of a horde of analytical techniques using small area statistics as well as neural networks.
With low- and high-income households existing side-by-side in India, ‘affluence’ in the country is defined as a large proportion of households which have incomes more than Rs 10 lakh. As such, the affluent pin codes typically pertain to areas which have the maximum proportion of households above the ‘Rs 10-lakh income’ threshold and also have fairly high per capita incomes.
To find out the most affluent pin codes in India, Indicus concentrated its attempt in only those areas which have a minimum of 1,000 households in a particular pin code.
As per Indicus, pin codes in south Delhi and south Mumbai chiefly reflect among the highest affluence levels in the country. It has also been found that the central parts of Metropolitan cities are generally among the most affluent pin codes; largely because of the fact that these areas mostly boast better road infrastructure, better urban planning, and close proximity to business centres and government.
