The building under construction was an illegal structure. The engineers collected samples and said it looked like substandard construction.

The construction site on Bannerghatta Road-200-foot wide and 30-foot high wall-came crashing down. Five crushed under wall debris and five labourers were injured.  Food & civil supplies and power minister Shobha Karandlaje visited the spot and announced Rs 1 lakh compensation for each of the deceased and Rs 25,000 for each of the injured. She said an inquiry would probe the incident.

While Pargu, 40, Rajiv, 60, Sanjeev, 25, Raju, 60, and Jugesh, 40, died in the crash, the injured are Sonu, 35, Santhosh, 18, Varmandi, 35, and Nagarjuna, 21. They were rushed to Victoria Hospital.

Around 12 noon, over 50 labourers were working on different sections of the building, putting up brick walls around pillars erected a few days ago. About 10 labourers constructed makeshift wooden steps to pass up the cement mixture. Suddenly, the wall leant to one direction and then crashed to the ground. While five workers were crushed under the debris, five were pulled out and rushed to hospital. While one of them, Nagarjuna, was treated as an out-patient, the others are still in hospital.

The engineers collected samples and said it looked like substandard construction.Bangalore Special Deputy Commissioner M K Aiyappa said the owner hadn’t taken any permission from the government to construct an industrial shed and the land had not been converted for industrial use. Central Range IGP Kamal Panth said they are still searching for Srinivas Reddy-the owner. “The preliminary inquiry shows that sub-standard construction caused the crash,” he said.

Home minister R Ashoka and a team of PWD engineers inspected the spot. The engineers collected samples and said it looked like substandard construction. “They’ve used filtered sand and jelly powder with the cement. The sand-cement composition too is not according to norms. It hasn’t supported the heavy pillars, which are packed with iron rods. That’s why the entire wall come crashing down,’’ he said.
