Infra projects to be focused by Modi government, but not without challenges
Narendra Modi-led new Government at the Centre will apparently give high priority to roads, railways, ports and several other infrastructure projects; but there will probably be a lot of challenges to be faced.
The manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had envisaged “all-weather roads” for all villages; and had highlighted its objective to develop a “Diamond Quadrilateral” of high speed train networks in India.
However, the new Government is likely to face several impediments in the process of accomplishing its aims. The main obstacles which the new Government will seemingly face will include limited availability of state funds as well as low participation of the private sector. Moreover, a number of key border and coastal projects have been on the back burner because of high construction costs.
Projects in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast region had specifically been emphasized in the BJP manifesto. The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had also given priority to Northeast projects, and although the proposed Udhampur-Katra rail line will also become operational soon, a lot of work still remains to be done to match the aggressive pace at which infrastructure have been developed by the China government on the border.
Meanwhile, among the other focus areas spotlighted on in the BJP manifesto are expediting the work on dedicated freight corridors, national highways, as well as modernization of airports and exploring the potential for inland air transportation.
