Jammu and Kashmir attracts tourists by its world’s highest rail bridge

bridgeJammu and Kashmir- One of the most appealing destinations in India, Jammu and Kashmir has the world’s highest rail bridge apart from its scenic beauty and magnificent landscapes.

The Indian Railways has put in efforts to construct this highest bridge and will be completing it by 2016. This bridge which is named as Chenub Bridge will be another landmark for the tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir.

The bridge is arch shaped and runs across the Chenab river bed  in Reasi district which is five times higher than Qutub Minar at 359 metres above river bed. This will be connected to Baramulla and Srinagar to Jammu via Udhampur-Katra-Qazigund. The estimated time covered  by the train will be seven hours.

This exclusive project fell prey to various issues like its alignment, security concerns and feasibility. These factors have begun to take shape along with the construction of pillars on both the sides.

According to an official, they are expecting to complete the project by December 2016 a year before the Udhampur-Baramulla stretch is commissioned. This bridge which measures about 1,315-metre will have several unique features.

The designs on the bridge ensure that its withstands the blast and seismic activities along with the signalling arrangements which will keep the train away from high wind velocity at that height.

The bridge site also has an anemometer which will measure the wind speed at the bridge site by interlocking the train movement over the bridge automatically in case of the wind above prescribed speed. The bridge will withstand trains  at 100 km/ph with a life o 120 years.

The bridge was designed with an arch shape to absorb the seismic forces unlike concrete structures. Also this structure is easier to construct and maintain along with the rehabilitation of the steel structure when compared to other structures.

Despite an element removed, the trains can still run at a restricted speed of 30 km/ph on the bridge but missing of any of the columns will let the deck collapse. The normal bridge operation will however be possible. Konkan railway Corporation Ltd is the executing agency which has been handling tough projects.
