Jayalalitha announces series of residential housing projects

Jaya LalithaChennai- Jayalalithaa, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu has unveiled slew of mega residential projects across the state, including a Rs 120-crore integrated satellite township on the outskirts of Madurai, a Rs 612 crore project of 10-storeyed apartments in Sholinganallur and also proposed to construct 4,422 houses in various other districts.

These projects are being implemented by Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) and Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB).

The township at Madurai would be developed along Madurai-Tirunelveli highway near the airport. It would be created on a 586.86 acre of land which is presently owned by Tamil Nadu Housing Board in Thoppur-Uchapatti. This township is 15 km from Madurai and will have all infrastructural facilities.

The township will encompass 19,500 plots out of which 14,300 2,500, 750 and 1,950 plots would be earmarked for low, middle, high income groups and economically weaker sections respectively. It will be equipped all basic amenities like drinking water, drainage system, roads,, rain water harvesting facilities, street light and parks.

Apart from basic amenities, the township will also have schools, commercial complexes, primary health centre, post office, police station, upgraded industrial plots and fire station. The fund would be provided by TNHB .

The ten-storey apartment project in Sholinganallur will have 1,500 apartments. It will be constructed with all pre-fab technology for different sections namely low, medium and high income group. This new technology is already implemented in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. On one hand, it reduces expenditure between 10 and 15 percent and on the other hand, it reduces time frame up to 25 percent.

Chennai alone will get more than 5,000 new houses. A total of 844 houses would be developed at seven sites in and around Chennai at a cost of Rs 3787.5 crore. Also, 3,500 apartments in city and other districts would be constructed in by demolishing old structures at a cost of Rs 280 crore.
