The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa wants the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to set up a campus during the present financial year as has been planned as a part of the Budget in order to increase the autonomous public medical college group in the country. This will definitely in help in the development of Tamil Nadu both in the field of education and health.

There have been seven campuses which are being planned to set up. Six of these new campuses have come up over the last two years at the cost of around Rs 840 crore per institution. The new AIIMS will help in meeting the need of seats for medical students. There has always been a scarcity of medical seats in good medical colleges. Also an AIIMS in each state will help in meeting the needs of that particular state in term of medical problem.

In the letter to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, Jayalalitha stated that the state and the agencies are already in possession of a very well connected land parcel in the districts of Chengalpattu, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Erode and Madura. Any reply to the letter has not yet been reported.
