Jayanagar residents protest against organic waste convertor unit
Bangalore- The construction of an organic waste convertor unit at Jayanagar was opposed by the residents fearing the negative effects of the convertor.
Concerned about the health hazards associated with the organic waste converter unit, the residents of Jayanagar staged a protest to stop the unit from being set up on the Jayanagar swimming pool premises.
Doctors advised that the groundwater will get polluted spreading bacterial infections and diseases if the waste converter is set up, said G. Rajkumar Shrivastava, president of the Residents Association I and III blocks (east). The residents are also worried that the place could become a breeding place for mosquitoes.
According to a recent press release issued by the association stated that the construction of the organic waste converter, which has begun, is in violation of norms. It is being constructed on a storm-water drain which is in contrary to the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act.
A memorandum demanding criminal proceedings against the concerned officials for constructing the waste convertor without prior permissions was signed by around 125 residents and the copies were submitted to the Mayor, the Commissioner and the Chief Engineer (South), the Additional Commissioner (South), the Executive Engineer and the MLA from Jayanagar.
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is waiting for legal opinion. The concerns of the residents will be addressed before setting up the convertor, said K.V. Trilok Chandra, Additional Commissioner (South).
