Kalina belt residents opt flood-resistant interiors
The floods of 2005 created mess in the Santa Cruz-Kalina belt but, for many of its residents, their anguish did not end with that one unforgiving monsoon.
Every year, whether the rains are ruthless or not, high tide causes flooding in the ground floor houses at Air India Colony in Kalina and at Saraswati Road in Santa Cruz (West).
Owing to such factors, several residents have kept wooden furnitures aside and have opted for materials such as marble and granite.
Some homes include beds made of bricks and cement, and the room walls are tiled from floor to ceiling. Some have even built sofa out of marble.
The refrigerator and beds are set on marble platforms elevated at 18 inches above the floor. The residents say that the decor may not be very aesthetic but it is practical.
