Kannur International Airport in Kerala to be ready for trials by December 2015
In a recent briefing to the media representatives in Thiruvananthapuram, K Babu – Minister for Excise, Ports and Civil Aviation – said that the Kannur International Airport in Kerala will be ready for trials by December 2015; with commercial operations at the airport likely to commence by May 2016.
According to the information shared by K Babu, the integrated terminal at the Kannur airport will have a 75,000 sq ft passenger terminal building facility. During peak hours, the domestic as well as international terminals at the airport will be capable of handling up to 2,000 passengers.
There will be 48 check-in counters, 32 emigration counters, and 16 escalators at the terminal. Some of the other passenger facilities at the airport will include duty-free shops, pedestrian bridges, as well as a road which connects the terminal building and the car park.
The Minister also told the mediapersons that, for the Kannur International Airport project, nearly 1,844 acres of land have been acquired; and that the third phase of the land acquisition is presently in the final stages.
For developing the runway of the airport, and also for working on the airside, L&T has won the tender for nearly Rs 499 crore. Thus far, L&T has completed 10 percent of the work.
Meanwhile, with the design of the airport project to boast a ‘green’ building concept, the integrated project consultancy for the project is Aecom Asia; while the consultancy for the terminal building is Kitco.
