Kerala eyes private partners for 100 urban projects
Kerala is doing its bit to attract private players to partner in the implementation of 100 urban projects. Most of the projects listed are situated in urban centres, Manjalamkuzhi Ali, Minister for Urban Affairs, said. Some of them are development of Sakhthan Nagar in Thrissur (Rs 700 crore); Palayam (Rs 865.6 crore) and Big Bazar (Rs 750 crore) in Kozhikode; and Palayam (Rs 230 crore) in Thiruvananthapuram.
Also listed are Greater Cochin Development Authority projects (Rs 182 crore and Rs. 126 crore); bus stand-cum-car parking complex at Kottakal (Rs 233.38 crore); municipal mall at Kannur (Rs 113 crore); Sabarimala transit yard at Pathanamthitta (Rs 17 crore); and City Centre project in Ernakulam (Rs 55 crore).
Shopping complexes, convention centres, multiplex cinema halls, amusement parks, town beautification, street lights and hoardings, would also be showcased at the meet.
BEST-FIT NORM
Interested parties can log on to www.partnerkerala.com or call 09539156333 for free registration for the Kochi meet. The Minister said that the projects will be selected on the basis of best fit in terms of layout, density and geography of each city.
Ali said that Kerala has already set an example in resource allocation and strengthening local self-governments through decentralized planning. But the biggest challenge facing local governing bodies today is the lack of funds to upgrade and modernise infrastructure, he said. He recalled that city corporations depend on financial support from government for their day to day expenses.
