Kerala government will not cooperate with Aranmula airport project

A Kerala Minister said on Monday that the Congress-led UDF government will not extend its cooperation to the proposed private international airport project at Aranmula.

The work on the controversial Rs 2,000-crore Aranmula airport project, which is being touted as the first private greenfield airport project in India, has been brought to a standstill by the Southern bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The Kerala government has a 10 percent stake in the project.

Asserting the government’s decision about not cooperating with the Aranmula airport project, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan – Kerala’s Minister for Forest and Transport – said that the government also has no plans to appeal against the ruling of the NGT. However, the Minister also added that no report thus far suggests that the directives of the Tribunal have been violated by the company.

The statement made by the Minister came – during the question hour in the Assembly on Monday – in response to a question about whether the government has any intention of collaborating in the Aranmula airport project after the NGT cancelled environmental clearance.

With regard to the Kerala government’s decision to refrain from cooperating in the Aranmula airport project, Radhakrishnan said that the question of government’s cooperation does not arise because “there was legal bar on the construction of the airport.”
