Kerala’s women self-help group Kudumbashree forays into construction sector
Kudumbashree - a women self-help group in Kerala – is set to venture into the construction arena. The group has already witnessed success in a number of diverse fields, ranging from pickle-making business to IT business.
Marking its foray into the construction sector, the Kudumbashree group has efforts underway to embark on a plan under which a ‘model tribal village’ will be built by a Kudumbashree unit at Edakkattuvayal in Ernakulam district.
To initiate work on the planned ‘model tribal village,’ the Kudumbashree group will soon file for the registration of a company called ‘Kudumbashree Constructions.’ All the employees of Kudumbashree’s construction company – from masons to engineers – will be women. Kudumbashree has already imparted constriction-related training to 220 volunteers with distinct qualifications and skills.
According to the details shared by a top official of the Kudumbashree group, the paperwork for the registration of ‘Kudumbashree Constructions’ is currently in progress. The official also confirmed that the first assignment to be taken up by the company will be to build a village for a select group of tribals in Ernakulam district.
About ‘Kudumbashree Constructions,’ K B Valsala Kumari – executive director of Kudumbashree – said: “Kudumbashree’s construction company will not only provide employment for women, but also prove a solution for increasing shortage of skilled workers.”
