Kopri mangrove face threat due an unplanned SEZ project

No Comments Sub Category:Realty News Posted On: Jul 23, 2014

The very few remaining pockets of the wetlands, creeks and mangroves in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which are home to a large number of threatened bird species, have been facing destruction problems from the unplanned developmental activities. The wetland is facing destruction which is in turn hampering the natural habitat of several bird species.

In a very recent case a large chunk of wetland along the Thane Creek which is designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and Bird Life International (UK) is now allegedly being destroyed by an upcoming Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project.  The upcoming special economic zone will probably be shifted to a different place in order to avoid the destruction in the wetland. The wetland has several species of bird residing.

The Researchers said that an area of about 20 hectares along the Thane Creek near Mithbunder Road, Kopri, is being reclaimed for an upcoming SEZ project of the Sun stream City. This might help saving wetland. The depletion of natural habitats is increasing these days due to developmental activities near the habitats. This problem can be solved by stopping developmental activities near the wetlands.
