Land acquisition law: Changes to be made soon: Jaitley
Even though the amendments came to force recently in the land acquisition law which was passed by the erstwhile UPA government, the criticism of the new law that has practically stalled all land acquisitions continues. Congress-ruled states have petitioned the new Narendra Modi government to make changes in the law and Nitin Gadkari had spoken to the state chief ministers to collect a list of the amendments requested by them.
The finance minister Arun Jaitley mentioned that the government is looking into making the necessary changes. Jaitley met a number of leaders of the last government who are very critical of the land bill. This list includes the Congress chief ministers who had supported the bill in the legislation, however are now realising that it was a wrong step.
India Inc. has expressed concerns over the implementation of the land acquisition law saying that it could stall the development in the country. Senior government officials have also spoken against the new land law that prescribes a cumbersome process of land acquisition. As a result of which, the projects were awarded to the developers without acquiring land and those projects are now stalled as there is no land on which the highway or the structure can be erected.
Rajiv Kumar’s book ‘Exploding Aspirations-Unlocking India’s Future’ was released in an elaborate function and Jaitley was speaking at a function for the release of this book. Jaitley expressed his concerns on the situation of the land acquisition bill and assured the country that their stable and decisive government will make it possible for India to exceed the growth rates of 8-9 %.
