Land acquisition still pending for Jaipur-Gurgaon highway-widening work
The project pertaining to the widening of Jaipur-Gurgaon highway stretch faces a number of hindrances with regard to its completion by the revised October 2014 deadline. Although the work on the highway has accelerated after high-level intervention, the Rajasthan government has still not acquired several hectares of land for the highway-widening project.
The Rajasthan government has yet to acquire almost 228 hectares of additional land, for widening of the 161-km stretch falling in the state. Although the acquisition of 28.85 hectares – at Behror – out of the mentioned land was published in September 2013, the award of land has not been declared by the Sub-divisional Magistrate for past nine months.
Similarly, land acquisition in Kotputli was commenced by the authorities in January 2009, while the declaration of acquisition was made only on November 2013. Moreover, 23.08 hectares of the land acquired in Kotputli has not been handed over for the construction by the state government.
In reference to the pending land acquisition at the Rajasthan government level, unidentified sourced have revealed that the government takes 2-3 years, on average, to complete the land acquisition process.
Noting that “land availability” was the key issue affecting the Jaipur-Gurgaon highway-widening project right from the beginning, a senior official of NHAI in Delhi said: “No developer can work on patches of land and waiting for another piece of land to be handed over later. This is not feasible and even practical.”
