Land deals prohibited in Kanwar lake bird sanctuary area
Begusarai- Sale and purchase of any kind of land under the notified area of the Kanwar lake bird sanctuary, has been banned completely. Even land deals of government land under Asia’s largest freshwater oxbow lake has been banned.
In what aims at putting brakes on the illegal sale and purchase of even government land under Asia’s largest freshwater oxbow lake – the Kanwar lake bird sanctuary area – recently ordered complete ban on land sale and purchase of any kind of land under the notified sanctuary area.
Begusarai DM Manoj Kumar has recently written a letter to the sub-registrars under Manjhaul and Bakhri subdivisions regarding the new order. The DM alleged that even the government land is being illegally sold by some people.
Purchase or sale of land under the notified area is strictly prohibited according to the Wildlife Protection Act. Even in case of private ownership succession, the order will not change, confirmed the DM.
The rule seems to have provoked protests from local farmers. But the rule is curbing the bad practice of illegal land deals in the notified area.
About 15,000 acres of land was notified as Kanwar bird sanctuary in 1989 since the area is a natural wetland of freshwater attracting thousands of rare species of migratory birds from various parts of the world.
The local farmers want the sanctuary area to be reduced to 1,400 acres and development of the area as Krishi-cum-Pakshi Vihar. Three years earlier, the chief conservator of forests had urged the then district magistrate stressing on the need for formation of a technical committee to resolve the issue.
The entire Kanwar lake, in the present season, has been lacking water. This can be attributed to the phenomenon to construction of roads under the PMGSY scheme and coming up of fresh human habitats in the surrounding area which blocked the water channels leading to the wetland area.
