Land sharks grab wetland, allocate into plots for sale
Recently a wetland at Pirtala in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area has been filled up in broad daylight and been allocated into plots by land sharks and are being sold at Rs 3.25 lakh per cottah.
Located in Chowbaga, the 52-bigha waterbody was filled with marsh around. In the summer, the water dried up, leaving behind a fertile piece of land. Taking the advantage, the promoters, planned to sell off the land through allocating it into 3 to 7 cottah plots.
Nearby residents alleged that realtors, politicians and local giants are creating mess. They are grabbing land with liberty and no one dares to oppose.
The sellers of the land advise investors to buy land within a month. When questioned, they say there is a minor legal issue, which will be sorted out shortly.
East Kolkata Wetland Management Authority (EKWMA) chief technical officer Arijit Banerjee, who had initiated the drive to tear down the wall around Collector bheri, said he would take up the issue at the next meeting of EKWMA on July 19.
