Lift Irrigation project to Telangana
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and Maharashtra Chief Minister Pruthviraj Chauhan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Pranahita-Chevella project.
The agreement was signed on 5th May 2012, between the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra in the presence of Union Water Resources Minister, PK Bhansal in Delhi. The estimated budget for the project is Rs 38,500 crores and the completion is expected by 2018-19.
The project plan involves lifting water from Godavari-Pranahita and pumping it to Chevella to provide water to farmers in Chevella and also to the farmers along the route.
In Lift irrigation scheme, water is lifted from lower level to higher level with the help of pumps and other equipments. It is estimated that the project will irrigate 16.70 lakh acres of land in Adilabad, Nizambad, Karimnagar, Medak, Warangal, Rangareddy and Nalgonda districts.
The project is expected to provide 30 TMC of drinking water for greater Hyderabad, 10 TMC for several villages and 16 TMC for industries.
The project is also expected to bring relief to the Congress party in the Telangana region. The leaders feel that they can rebuild their image through this project.
Some ministers say that the credit of Pranahita-Chevella goes to Kiran Kumar Reddy whereas the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) says that the credit goes to Telangana forces only.
