Locals against DDA over converting sports hub to mall

DDA officials and the local councilor had faced the wrath of locals of Alaknanda in South Delhi as the authorities decided to sell a part of the property to a private company to construct a mall. The property was actually allotted for a sports complex, community centre, dispensary and other public utilities.

The property is approximately 8.5 acres, out of which a larger portion has been handed over to two private companies to construct commercial projects.

Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna has received complaint from the locals saying that they were promised the amenities for almost a decade.

As per a resident, initially the property had a display as ‘land for DDA sport complex’  for a long time, but recently it was removed and metal sheet fencing has come up. Later they got to know, a mall is getting constructed on the land.

However, Virender Kasana, former DDA member and area councillor explained that the land was initially planned to be divided into various parts. Out of which, four parts were dedicated for commercial activities and remaining six parts for the public utilities.

He also added that they are planning to construct dispensary and a police station in the area. And baraat ghar and a petrol pump have already been constructed on one section, for public use. But he emphasized, as building a sports complex was never been planned by them. The area where the mall is getting build up was actually meant for commercial project itself, and has also been handed over to the private companies after auction, which was held up in a legal way.

As per the appeal made by 160 residents, this big mall may cause safety as well as health hazards for senior citizens and also for the kids. They said, even abroad, large shopping malls are not allowed to be constructed in small residential areas.

A senior DDA official has acknowledged their complaint and agreed to look into this matter.
