Low rise buildings to face fire test

The AP State Disaster Response and Fire Services department has planned to tighten fire safety norms for the non-high-rise buildings.

Hence, owners of non-high-rise buildings would have to obtain a license from the department for their property and have to pay a fee after providing fire-fighting equipment on their premises.

The department will check the availability fire-fighting equipment in all buildings above 10 m as per the National Building Code apart from license, said, K Jayaram Naik, the fire services department additional director.

The department would now implement section 14 and 15 of the of the AP Fire and Emergency Operations Rules, 2006, which deal with preventive measures against fire, especially for buildings between 10m and 15m in height.

Under this section, the fire services department has powers to seal or close premises which have failed to follow norms.

According to official estimates, more than 50,000 buildings would have to obtain licences after the new norms are imposed.

Under this, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and other corporations, fire prevention wings, would collect the license fee and the fire department, which would collect licence fee for the rest of the state.
