L&T Hyderabad Metro rail project likely to be tweaked
The L&T Hyderabad Metro rail project is likely to suffer delays, escalation of costs, and change in terms of concession agreement; with Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao having suggested that the alignment of the project should be tweaked in congested business hubs and at a busy road near the heritage structures.
The officials from L&T and Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd. have not yet made any comments Rao’s suggestions and its far-reaching implications, as they are apparently analyzing the changes suggested by Rao.
L&T Hyderabad Metro rail project is a Rs. 16,000-crore project which seeks to decongest three dense corridors in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The proposed decongestion will require the construction of an elevated metro rail across a stretch of 72 km.
It was on the basis of detailed surveys that the elevated metro project was conceived for the Deccan rock rich terrain of Hyderabad. A sector expert has revealed that, going by conservative estimates, the per km cost of construction of the elevated rail was Rs. 200 crore, as compared to an estimated Rs. 500 crore for an underground rail network.
With the L&T Hyderabad Metro rail project presently at an advanced stage of construction, a change in design at this juncture could put the project in jeopardy. Since pillars have been put up on both sides of the elevated metro network, it will not be a feasible to bring the pillars down and take them underground.
