On Friday, Rs 4,240 crore FY 2014-15 Budget was approved by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The allocation of the mentioned FY 2014-15 Budget amount for the MMRDA is an evident indication of the fact that the metro rail, mono rail and flyovers for the Mumbai metropolitan region rank high on the priority list of the government.

Out of the approved amount of Rs 4,240 crore, the MMRDA has earmarked Rs 634 crore for the metro rail projects. Of the metro rail projects for which the amount has been earmarked, Rs 500 crore has been set aside specifically for the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro corridor.

Moreover, with the Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd corridor having run into environmental issues, the Chief Minister has sanctioned Rs 4 crore for carrying out fresh studies. The corridor will now be fully underground.

Among the other projects on which the Budget allocation approved for the MMRDA will be used, an expenditure of Rs 400 crore will be undertaken by the agency to complete the second-phase work of mono rail project from Wadala to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk in South Mumbai. With the work on the second phase well under way at present, it is expected that this phase will be completed in 2015.
