Maharashtra govt likely to seek Attorney General’s opinion on Campa Cola eviction

No Comments Sub Category:Mumbai,Realty News Posted On: Jun 17, 2014

With regard to the issue involving the eviction of residents of the Campa Cola society, the Maharashtra government will apparently turn to the Attorney General of India for legal opinion.

The legal opinion which the Maharashtra government will probably seek from the Attorney General will largely pertain to the manner and extent of the government’s intervention into the issue of Campa Cola society residents who are trying to prevent their eviction from the Campa Cola complex.

With an earlier ruling by the Supreme Court having given the residents a May 31 deadline – rebuffing their request for extension – to vacate their homes in the Campa Cola society, unidentified sources have revealed that the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is apparently planning to demolish the internal walls of the society later this month. The BMC has also decided to cut essential supplies – such as water, electricity, and gas – to the residents.

However, Minority Affairs Minister Mohammed Arif Naseem Khan said at a recent Cabinet meeting that the residents of the Campa Cola society have been living there for over two decades, during which the civic body has provided them basic amenities.

The sources familiar with the situation have revealed that Khan drew attention to the fact that “there is panic among the residents after the court orders and the government should do something on humanitarian grounds.” The sources also added that “PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal and Minister of State for Housing Sachin Ahir supported Khan’s demand.”
