Maharashtra’s new industrial policy criticised, favours developers
The new industrial policy that has been sketched out by the Maharashtra Government has been highly criticized by the Opposition. They allege that the policy favours realty developers at the cost of farmers and villagers.
However, Maharashtra Chief Minister, Prithviraj Chavan has defended the policy and termed it as “path breaking” which introduced Integrated Industrial Areas (IIAs).
Many activists have claimed that the policy will be profitable to the real estate sector, while another party has claimed it will benefit the industrialists and developers, since 40 percent of the land made available from denotifying SEZs will be used for commercial and residential apartments in Mumbai as per new policy.
As per original SEZ policy, only 50 percent area was available for industrial development. However, that policy is scrapped now. The new policy talks about 60 percent and remaining area for residential, educational, health, recreational infrastructure development.
Furthermore, the policy talks about development of Mumbai-Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, Mumbai-Pune-Solapur, Mumbai-Nashik- Aurangabad-Amravati-Nagpur corridors in addition to the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial corridor which will help in the connectivity and growth issues.
The industry body of the state, CCI has also welcomed the new policy unlike the previous one.
