During the course of a speech at a programme held in West Midnapore district, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reiterated, yet again, that the government will not resort to forceful acquisition of land for industrialization.

Asserting that the West Bengal government is “against forceful acquisition of land,” Banerjee said that land for industrial projects in West Midnapore district will be allotted from the land bank which the Haldia Development Authority and WBIDC have in the district.

Revealing that plans are underway to develop an IT hub and an industrial park in Haldia, Banerjee said that she – along with a business delegation – would visit Singapore to attract investments for West Bengal.

Banerjee said that the growth in industrial sector in West Bengal is “more than national average,” and added that the state has now become the top-ranking state in terms of number of projects. Banerjee said: “From 17th rank we have come to the 1st rank in 100 days work scheme.”

With regard to the projects coming up in the near future, Banerjee said that the West Bengal government is presently in the process of setting up 500 marketing hubs – to be named ‘Karma Tirtha’ – across the state. Noting that the marketing hubs will potentially provide employment to 1 lakh people, Banerjee said that 50 of these hubs are ready and will be inaugurated soon.
