Modi’s first major foreign visit to Japan since his swearing in to bear fruits soon
Since his landslide election victory in May, this is the first major foreign visit for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He arrived in Japan on Saturday seeking to capitalise on his affinity with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe to strengthen the security and business ties.
It is an exciting news for us Indians that Modi is one of only three people that Abe follows on Twitter. Japan was always known for its edge over other countries for the development of science and technology. And knowing that Abe admires Modi is a great boost to the confidence of the Indian nationals as they had chosen Modi in the last general election. Modi admires the Japanese premier Abe’s brand of nationalist politics.
Modi said before departing on Saturday for the five-day visit to Japan that he intends to explore how Japan can associate itself productively with his vision of inclusive development in India. He listed manufacturing, infrastructure and energy as key areas for cooperation.
In his previous role as the chief minister of Gujarat, Modi had actively courted Japanese investment and was quite successful in that field. In Japan, Modi will lobby for Abe to back a nuclear energy pact. This will be done by Modi to benefit both the nations although the hopes of striking a similar accord to the one reached with the United States in 2008 had faded in the run-up to the visit.
