Muktsar-Malout highway closed for past 3 months due to bridge collapse
The construction work on new bridge, in place of a partially collapsed bridge, on the Muktsar-Malout highway has not been started by the concerned authorities so far, even though the bridge collapsed three months back.
The bridge in question is the one on the Abohar branch minor at Mehrajwala village on the Muktsar-Malout highway. It has been closed to vehicular traffic ever since its collapse, but the construction of the new bridge has not even started as yet.
With the Muktsar-Malout highway having been closed down due to the bridge collapse, local residents are facing a lot of hardships because of lack of any other proper load link connecting Muktsar and Malout.
As a result, while the 31-km-long stretch between Muktsar and Malout can be travelled in approximately 40 minutes, the commuters on the highway now have to take a deviation which has increased the distance to 40 km, and the travelling time to nearly one hour.
Though the authorities claim that the construction of the new bridge will be completed before the end of this year, an unidentified source has asserted that the construction will take longer. The source explained: “The construction work has not yet been allotted to any construction company and it would not be possible to complete it by December. The monsoon season will also hamper the construction work.”
