Mumbai: MMRDA approves a series of infrastructure projects in Thane

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has recently given its approval to a number of infrastructure projects in Thane; thereby triggering the hope that the transport-related problems of the Thane-Kalyan residents will be eased in the near future.

The projects which have received the go-ahead form MMRDA include the road connectivity between Thane-Kalyan, parallel to the railway tracks.

In addition, the administrative approval has also been given by the planning body to the Dombivli-Mankoli road on the Mumbai-Nasik highway, to reduce the commuting time for the local residents. With plans underway to build a 3.2-km cable suspension bridge to connect Mankoli junction to Dombivli, the travelling time between Thane and Dombivli will be reduced to less than 30 minutes.

The Rs 200-crore cable suspension bridge linking Mankoli junction and Dombivli will be built on concrete stilts. One-third portion of the proposed bridge will be installed on the Thane creek; and the other end will stretch along the vast expanse of fallow land which culminates at the Mumbai-Nasik highway. The project will be wholly funded by the MMRDA.

About the proposed elevated link between Mankoli junction and Dombivli, MP Dr Shrikant Shinde said: “This linkway will help turnaround the entire region. People in Dombilvi have to take a 20-km circuitous route via Kalyan and Bhiwandi to be able to reach Thane… The new link will reach them on the highway in 20 minutes and they can reach Thane in another 10 minutes.”
