Mumbai monorailMonorail project in Mumbai has again missed its deadline. The mono line between Chembur and Wadala is now going to be functional by August instead of January 2013 as announced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.
The project implementation started in 2008 and this is the third time the project is getting delayed. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is a planning agency for various infrastructure projects in MMR, had projected that the phase I of the Rs 2,900-crore monorail project would start operations in November 2010 which was subsequently postponed to January 2013 and now it has been revised to August next year.
Monorail with four cars will accommodate 562 passengers while six car one would accommodate 852 passengers. Monorail has recently completed its trail. Monorail project is a total investment of over Rs 60,000 crores and it is one of the major infrastructure project proposed in Mumbai. Other major infrastructural projects include  sea link, flyovers, metro rail, bridges and additional rail corridors. These projects are near to completion.
An MMRDA official said that the delay in project is because of some issues related to construction and design, rehabilitation of project affected persons. The project has also been hampered by the removal of encroachments and seeking police personnel.
The official hopes that the new deadline of August will be definitely achieved. It is expected that phase II will also be delayed because of other circumstances. The phase II of 10.368 km between Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk and Wadala would be operational not before 2014.
