Mumbai’s first stretches of metro and monorail to open this year

No Comments Sub Category:Infrastructure,Mumbai,Realty News Posted On: Feb 12, 2013

trainsMumbai- This year Mumbai will see the opening of its first stretches of metro and monorail followed by the trans-harbor link and the water transport network. However these projects have taken quite some time for a city like Mumbai with various problems.

There are many number of projects lined up in the city for this year with the first metro corridor starting on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar route contributing to the city’s lifeline of suburban railway system. Added to it, this will be the first phase of the country’s first monorail line stretching on the Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle route.

Also there will be an expansion of the east-west Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR) along with the north-south Eastern Freeway including Asia’s first set of urban road tunnels. All of these projects are worth Rs. 6,600 crore.

It is known that in the coming years, the city will have projects worth Rs. 69,500 crore which will further improve the transport network with the planning agencies moving from blueprint to reality.

Other projects are the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), which is the country’s longest sea link. It is a passenger water transport system for daily commuting and under sections of metro for high-speed connectivity to the airport.

On the other hand, some projects like the Western Freeway and the Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd elevated Metro corridor are still on the verge of positive changes.

The trademark problems for projects which are nearing completion are quite peculiar. It is quite difficult to find and acquire land in the city as land is a scarce resource with a large number of population sharing it in an unplanned city. Also large patches of public land has been encroached by the slums which are encouraged by the government policies.

As per an official, if the alignment of  the project passes through the slum, they will not be able to investigate even the basic issues. A cleared land is also susceptible to fresh encroachment. The authority also has to carefully divide and work on the rehabilitation process in the city.

Apart from encroachments and rehabilitation, problems like clearance from the authorities, underground problems, land acquisition, unplanned cities and lining up of innumerable projects have created a greater impact in the long run.
