Naidu: Union Govt ready to sanction ring metro rail service for Mumbai
In an announcement made in Mumbai on Tuesday, Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that the Union Government is ready to give its requisite approval to a ring metro rail service for the city, as well as its neighbouring areas like Thane, if the Maharashtra Government moves such a proposal.
Naidu reiterated the Union Government’s eagerness to facilitate Metro rail projects in several cities across the country.
Naidu’s statement about the Union Government’s readiness to sanction a ring metro rail service for Mumbai came at a Tuesday event related to the laying of the foundation stone for Mumbai’s ambitious Rs. 23,500-crore Metro III project. The project will be completed in seven years; and will link Cuff Parade in South Mumbai with Andheri via Worli and the airport.
The foundation stone for the Metro III project was laid in the presence of Naidu, and Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.
Noting that the Mumbai Metro III project will be India’s biggest mass transport infrastructure project, which will be constructed with the help of a Rs. 13,000 crore aid from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Chavan said: “Apart from Metro III project, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has also decided to develop several other public projects in areas away from Mumbai city.”
