Narendra Modi likely to reorganize major economic ministries to ensure greater synergy
On the lines of the style of leadership in Gujarat, Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi is likely to minimize the number of ministries through mega mergers.
The expected move to reorganize major economic ministries will essentially ensure greater synergy. The mega merger of ministries will also result in a situation where policy-making procedures and requirements are common across different sectors.
Though reorganization of major economic ministries will not be a feasible move – and will not be put into place immediately – in situations where the contours of an infrastructure ministry are ambivalent, it still is almost certain that there will be a bigger energy ministry under the new Government.
According to the details shared by BJP sources, an amalgamation of the coal, power and petroleum ministries will pave the way for well-coordinated policy-making as well as faster project implementation. As a result of the merger, it will be effectively ensured that these ministries are not at cross purposes as they are presently.
The BJP sources also said that it would be a good move by the new Government to merge three main infrastructure ministries — road transport and highways, shipping, and civil aviation — into one ministry. However, the sources also added that a move to combine the railways ministry into a proposed infrastructure ministry will not be an easy one, particularly because of the financial structure and political relevance of the national transporter.
