NDA Govt revives Taj International Greenfield airport project near Delhi

No Comments Sub Category:Realty News Posted On: Jul 23, 2014

On Monday, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, GM Siddeshwara, informed the Lok Sabha that the Taj International Greenfield airport project near Delhi has been revived by the NDA government. The project has been shelved for years.

The Greenfield airport proposal pertains to a second airport near Delhi; but outside the 150-km restriction which GMR Infrastructure – the current operator of the Delhi airport – has demanded.

Apprising the Lok Sabha about the NDA government’s decision to revive the Greenfield airport project, Siddeshwara said: “The Taj International Greenfield airport project at Hirangaon, Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh is presently under the preliminary scrutiny of the government.” The project is being pushed by the Uttar Pradesh government.

It was back in 2003 that the Hirangaon airport project was conceived by the former NDA government. Though the airport was scheduled to become operational in 2008, the UPA government had shelved the project because GMR Infra cited an agreement with the government which clearly ruled out the setting up of any airport within a distance of 150 kms from Delhi.

In fact, due to the same 150-km clause in the government’s agreement with GMR Infra, the UPA government had also shelved plans to construct an airport in Jewar in Greater Noida.
