In another bid to ease off traffic at major shopping destinations in New Delhi, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is planning to link underground parking lots and the markets through the underground car-corridors. The sites already identified by the council include Khan Market, Gole Market and INA/ Dilli Haat area. NDMC Chairman, Jalaj Shrivastava made this announcement on Wednesday during Budget presentation.

Another ambitious project that the NDMC is thinking on is to make its area fully Wi-Fi-enabled. Shrivastava said on this, “Such a system is available in major cities of the world. It will be free of cost for the first 15-30 minutes. Thereafter, it might be chargeable.” Other announcements by the council include a comprehensive plan for non-motorised transport in its area, full automation of the surface parking lots, installing CCTVs to monitor the entire public space and redevelopment of four main markets – Khan Market, Gole Market, Sarojini Nagar Market and INA Dilli Haat.

The agency, however, made no new project announcement in its Budget presentation for the coming year. In addition to setting up of a Wi-Fi system in its area and installing CCTV cameras which were carried on from the previous budget, the civic body has also plans to upgrade the solid waste management (environment sanitation) system. Other projects that it wants to implement include redevelopment of four markets and round-the-clock availability of water supply. The agency also plans to take up 126 water harvesting pits in NDMC area in the next year.

On the advice of IIT-Delhi, the agency has decided to improve its storm water drainage system. Shrivastava said on this, “The Pilot Project for construction of Tertiary Treatment Plant at Talkatora Garden has been started and shall be completed in the next financial year”. Besides, the NDMC also has decided to establish Wireless Addressable Fire Alarm Detection and Communication System with TCP/ IP based Centralised Monitoring Station (CMS) in 20 municipal buildings, in first phase during the next financial year.
