New committee to review resident ID card scheme
A new committee has been formed by the government to examine whether the home ministry’s resident ID card (RIC) scheme can be used to deliver financial services, rural employment, public distribution system and health insurance.
For the public distribution and direct cash transfers, the government has planned to use the Aadhaar platform of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI. Meanwhile, the finance ministry is believed to have piloted a direct cash transfer scheme in Mewat in Haryana.
The committee was appointed to check the feasibility of the RIC in other sectors, a government official said. The committee will also examine whether the RIC could be used for the delivery of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna (RSBY) and also for electoral purposes, the official added.
