NHAI blames State Govt for delay in Yamunanagar-Panchkula highway project

No Comments Sub Category:Infrastructure Posted On: Mar 13, 2014

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has blamed the state government for delay in 4-laning of Yamunanagar-Panchkula highway stretch of NH-73. Infrastructure major Gammon has walked out of the project on grounds of non-availability of land, delay in environment and forest clearances, besides scarcity of construction material in the state. Gammon was to invest Rs 934 crore for widening of this stretch in the next two-and-a-half years under the contract that would have lasted 22 years.

NHAI has asked the state government to maintain the stretch and also to demand enough funds from the road transport and highways ministry. NHAI member (finance) Satish Chandra has said in a letter to PWD secretary, Sanjeev Kaushal that there are delays in approvals for diversion of forest land and thus the concessionaire of the project has issued notice to NHAI for closure of the project. He also added that the project has been rendered unviable due to uncertainty in obtaining approvals, non-availability of land and escalation of cost of construction material.

It has been estimated that Rs. 18.3 crore would be required to maintain the entire stretch.
