NHAI has lined up projects worth Rs 8,700 crore

After a lull of several months, road projects have now got off the ground. In the last month, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has lined up about Rs.8, 700 crore worth of projects for tendering via the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) route.

Although this proposes to build only 1,000km, a minuscule portion of 2014-15’s targets, it inspires confidence among investors and developers that the new government is serious about infrastructure development. That’s not all.

Road tenders for about 376km of roads are lined up for bidding through the build-operate-transfer (BOT) route. However, developers seem to prefer EPC projects as shown by the 27 bidders, including mid-sized construction firms, in the fray for these. This is in spite of the liquidity crunch and the overhang of earlier projects mired in execution challenges.

The road and transport ministry have become very serious in their work this is mainly why there has been a sudden rush in the progress through the several road development projects. This is being done mainly to do away with the road connectivity issues.
