‘Parliament might not be shifted to new building’

Even as the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has proposed plots for construction of new Parliament House, government sources said that there was no plan to shift the parliament to a new building.
Several MPs, including those from Congress and BJP have also indicated their opposition to shift Parliament to a new building.
In a letter to the secretaries general of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and to the Union Ministry of Urban Development, CPWD chief engineer S K Srivastava pointed out that the Parliament House is 85-year-old and suggested options where a new building could come up.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said that the building needs renovation and should make sure that it is used properly.

Instead of shifting the Parliament to a new building, methods should be taken to preserve the building and use it as it was conceived when it was constructed, he added.
