property tax payment in ChennaiChennai- Soon, the residents of Chennai will be able to pay their property tax in all 200 wards of the city.

In this regard, the Chennai Corporation has directed the zonal level officers to identify suitable structures for setting up counters. The work of listing existing facilities in all wards would be initiated in next seven days.

There are around 10.71 assessees in the city and these facilities provided in each ward office will help in easy property tax collection. Moreover, the assessees can get the receipt immediately through hand-held billing machines on counter.

While those applying for online and electronic clearing service mode of property tax do not get receipts soon. Thus, many assessees are preferring to pay property tax at ward offices. And now the biggest challenge in front of corporation is inadequate number of counters in the city.

Residents can also pay property tax by approaching tax collectors or assessors. They use hand-held machines instead of ledgers to access details on property and tax. This machine also gives receipt on the spot and accepts credit cards, debit cards, cheques and demand drafts.

Many residents find difficult to avail the services of tax collectors as there is no facility or room which is dedicated for this purpose. It is expected that ward offices would help and allow residents to pay property tax at their own convenience.

Earlier, the corporation had planned to set up 2,000 bank counters in the city to improve property tax collection. The civic body dropped this plan as some bank counters were facing server problems on a regular basis.

The property tax has been made online in Chennai from January,1,2013. Now the residents of Sholinganallur, Perungudi , Valasaravakkam , Alandur and other 15 newly extended zones can pay their taxes online. But this mode of payment is used by around 10 percent of the assessees. Among these assessees, few are Non Resident Indians who own properties in Chennai.

According to officials, the ward offices would soon become the most popular mode of property tax payment. It will result in reduction of number of assessees who fail to pay the property tax on time.
