Odisha govt to recommend one-year extension of Tata Steel’s Gopalpur SEZ
In an attempt to have the validity of the Tata Steel Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Gopalpur extended by one year, the Odisha government plans to send its recommendation to development commissioner, Falta SEZ.
According to the information shared by an unnamed senior official of the Odisha state industries department, the Chief Minister has given the approval for the extension of the validity of Tata Steel’s Gopalpur SEZ.
The official said that the department now intends sending its recommendation to the development commissioner, Falta SEZ, for the extension of validity of the SEZ till June 17, 2015.
The Gopalpur SEZ is being set up by Tata Steel on the 3,700 acres of land which the company had acquired in the mid-1990s. The land had originally been acquired by the company for setting up a 10 million tonne steel plant at Gopalpur; but that project was later dropped, and the land was lying vacant.
With Tata Steel having got the go-ahead from the Central government for the Gopalpur SEZ, it is being speculated that the industrial park can potentially attract investments of approximately Rs 15,000 crore. Thus far, the park has attracted downstream investments in a number of sectors including auto components, apparel, gems & jewellery, ores and minerals processing, speciality chemicals, marine food processing, and logistics and warehousing.
