Illegal structures being demolishedBhubaneswar- Over 100 illegal structures in Bhubaneswar has been listed by the Orissa government for demolition.

Housing and urban development minister, Raghunath Mohanty, in a written reply to an MLA’s query has told that the government has already issued demolition orders against 139 illegal buildings in Bhubaneswar. These structures were reportedly blocking flow of rainwater creating flash-floods during monsoons.

It has come to light that the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) did not renew registration of builders who have developed these structures. This means projects undertaken by such dubious builders will not get BDA approval for their projects in future, the minister said.

During the last rainy season, rainwater flowed into several houses located in the low-lying areas of Acharya Vihar behind Science Park, Behera Sahi (Nayapalli), Shastri Nagar and Old Town localities. Then it was revealed that several unauthorized constructions have been raised in the state capital, blocking the way for rainwater flowing to natural drains.

So far, the state government has recognized around 530 buildings and apartments in Bhubaneswar which are in violation of BDA norms. Cases have been lodged against the developers of these illegal buildings by BDA’s Officer on special duty (OSD).

The minister said that 3,352 persons had encroached over 38 acre of land in projects undertaken by Odisha State Housing Board (OSHB). The encroachers are mainly allottees in the OSHB projects concerned. The encroachers have illegally occupied open areas next to their homes.

In order to remove the encroachers from the encroached land, the state government has begun a move under Orissa Development Authorities (ODA) Act 1982 and Orissa Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants Act, l 972).

Earlier this month, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), on a massive eviction drive, had demolished around 207 unauthorized shops in Bhubaneswar. As per sources, 200 shops behind the Unit-II market complex were flattened and seven on the stretch between Rajmahal square and Sishu Bhawan. BMC commissioner said that the demolition in Unit-II market was essential to ease traffic movement.
