ORR property owners to pay betterment tax

Property taxProperty owners who are staying within 500 metres radius and along the outer ring road (ORR) need to pay betterment tax. MUDA has proposed to impose tax on the property owners to generate more revenue.

The civic body is planning to collect Rs 20 crore in the next fiscal from the proposed betterment tax. If sources are to be believed, Muda commissioner said that there is a provision under Karnataka Urban Development Act 1987 to impose betterment tax and the urban body has proposed to collect the same from this year.

Under this Act, all the denizens from Outer Ring Road need to pay one-time betterment tax. The tax was proposed as all the residents have benefited largely by the development of 45 meter wide ORR.

Hereafter, those who are owning four wheelers and heavy vehicles have to pay a toll if they use ORR in Mysore. Muda officials said that it will help to generate revenue of Rs 1 crore. the civic body need funds for developing the ORR as per the Centre’s requirement such as creating service road, on both sides, space for pedestrians and under bridge.

They have to generate funds on their own without asking any help from the government and thereafter the ORR toll. They are planning on how to go about it. Property owners who have left their plots vacant have to pay cleaning cess to the civic authority. This follows complaints from those in the vicinity of vacant sites in Muda layouts. Muda will charge tax on owners to remove weeds and debris from their sites. The tax is estimated at Re 1 per sqft. Rs 2 crore revenue is expected from this.
