Over 55,000 buildings in Mumbai are illegal
According to reliable sources, around 11 floors were demolished by the Mumbai municipality’s special squad. These floors were found in a building named Deshabhiman in Siddharth Nagar. Located in the western region of Goregaon and 25 kilometres away from Campa Cola Complex at Worli, the process of destruction began this January. This happened hardly two months after the Supreme Court delayed the demolition of flats at the Campa Cola residency. Indeed, the entire process took place very silently away from the media or even several visits from political leaders.
As the process of demolition is carried out in 35 floors of 7 buildings belonging to the Campa Cola Complex, the civic body has taken the initiative to point out many other buildings within the city. There were around 56,266 illegal buildings found according to the data recorded between the years of 2008 and 2013. Out of all of them, around 45,000 buildings had orders from the Supreme Court for demolition. Legal battles are still being carried out when it comes to the rest of the buildings.
The municipality has also mentioned in an affidavit that there are over a 100 buildings within the city which have Floor Space Index violations.
