PE players eye India’s Affordable and Low-Income Housing Sector
With expansion apparently on the horizon for India’s affordable and low-income housing sector, which presently has a shortfall of approximately 5-6 million homes, some bigwig real estate-focused private equity (PE) funds are planning to make investments in the sector.
A possible investment in India’s low-income housing sector in 2014 is an option that is being explored by Acumen, a not-for-profit venture fund based in New York. Meanwhile, Mumbai-based PE fund Avenue Venture Partners has already teamed up with Vastushodh Projects, Pune, to make an investment in their affordable housing projects.
Yet another PE fund, Brick Eagle Capital Advisory, has efforts underway to incubate companies for filling the gaps in the affordable-housing ecosystem.
About India’s affordable and low-income housing sector finding favour with PE firms, Brick Eagle Capital Group’s CEO Rajesh Krishnan said: “Affordable housing is recession-proof and sells regardless of market conditions.”
