If you are planning to construct a house in Greater Noida, you won’t be able to move in till there is a tree in full bloom within the premises. The rule holds true not only for residential areas, but commercial, institutional and industrial plots as well.

The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has adopted the green rule of ‘Each one, plant one’ for anyone to obtain a building’s completion certificate. GNIDA has made it mandatory for an allottee to plant a few evergreen trees in their premises. Moreover, the by-laws also say that if at any later stage the tree is cut, the allotment can be cancelled.

“Greater Noida is following the unique ecotel concept that voices out a commitment of pursuing progress in partnership with nature,” said chief executive officer, Rama Raman. As per the Authority’s green rules, the completion certificates are handed out to allottees only on fulfillment of two conditions. “First is planting of trees, and second is installing a system for rainwater harvesting,” said a senior officer of the Greater Noida horticulture department.

The number of trees to be planted depends on the size of the plot. The owners of 120-300 sq m residential plots must plant two saplings in their premises, while those owning a plot with size over 300 sq m should have three saplings. Housing societies have to plant a line of ornamental and evergreen plants, height ranging between 5m and 7.5m in their compound. Similarly, the commercial, industrial and institutional units must plant one tree per 100 sq m of open space, and at least half of these should be evergreen trees. The height of the tree should be at least 20 feet at the time of inspection.

Meanwhile, the GNIDA has undertaken a massive plantation drive to augment their existing green canopy in the city. Starting Saturday, the administrators launched a drive and planted 5,000 saplings along a 130m-wide road in the city. The target is to plant 3.65 lakh plants and trees in Greater Noida during this monsoon. The campaign will continue till the end of September,” said Raman.
