Plea to open the granite quarries and crusher units in Kerala

No Comments Sub Category:Realty News Posted On: Aug 06, 2014

In Kochi, the Joint Action Council of Construction Workers’ Unions have urged the State government of Kerala that all the granite quarries and crusher units in the State should be allowed to open and function normally. This move is set to be taken to ensure the employment of more than two million workers engaged in the construction activities.

India has a problem of unemployment and Kerala has the highest literacy rate. In spite of that the youth fails to get proper jobs and hence go to the gulf countries to work as construction labourers, mechanics, plumbers, electricians and do other blue collared jobs. Hence if these granite quarries and crusher units in the State are opened, then it will help the unemployment problem in the state to an extent.

The council has called for an agitation at all the district collectorates on Thursday. This move is done to seek the reopening of the quarries and to concede other demands of the unions.

Kerala is ruled by the left parties and the labour unions have become quite strong in the last 2 decades. The unions are hoping that the government will accept their demands and that will bring some relief to the families of the affected workers. We can hope that the agitation is peaceful and no untoward incident happens during that time.
