Civic body officials say that encroaching drain by one of the leading real estate companies may lead to floods in North Bangalore in the near future.

Sobha Developers, one of the leading real estate companies has been accused of encroaching 1 acre 28 guntas of land belonging to the BBMP to construct 1,190 residential flats which offers two and three-bedroom apartments. BBMP joint Commissioner Radhakrishna, (Bangalore north zone), filed a criminal complaint with the Peenya police on Monday.

The encroached land is a storm water drain, which flows from Nagasandra to join Vrushabhavati canal. Civic body officials say that this may lead to floods in North Bangalore in the near future. “Since a major stretch of the canal has been encroached, there is a possibility of floods in northern parts of Bangalore,” one of the members of the standing committee who is part of the inspection team.

The SWD flowing from Nagasandra passes from the middle of the construction site to join the Vrushabavathi canal, which is on the other side of the property. Radhakrishna added that the BBMP has asked the BDA, the sanctioned authority to submit the sanctioned plan for Sobha Developers for further probe. “We suspect there is something fishy about the whole project, and the BBMP is verifying all the documents about the project in this regard,” he said.

The encroachment came to light when Major works Sanding committee members visited construction site for inspection and noticed that the company has encroached 1 acre 28 guntas of land belonging to the BBMP, which comes under ward no 39, Chokkasandra on Tumkur road.

Meanwhile, R Raman, head of corporate communications for the developers said that company has not done anything wrong. “We are working on the project according to the rules, and the company has not encroach any government land,” he reiterated.
