Power crisis in UP continues

Power cutsNoida: Noida and Ghaziabad are witnessing continuous power cut issues for a week though discom officials alleged that the situation is improving slowly.

Several residents of apartments in Ghaziabad claimed that there was around 8-10 hours of power outages on Sunday. Noida residents also complained that they faced power-cuts of 3-4 hours. However, discom officials said that no emergency rostering schedules had been enforced.

According to sources, the severe power crisis in UP is not just because of the demand-supply mismatch, but also due to political considerations. The additional power being supplied to some of the VIP districts like Amethi, Rae Bareli, Etawah, Mainpuri, Kannauj and Rampur has further increased the power shortage problem in other districts, including the crucial NCR comprising Gautam Budh Nagar, Ghaziabad and even the Taj Trapezium area. Till last year, the VIP districts had been getting power supply for 10-12 hours, but now the SP government has ensured 24 hours supply.

Due to this, every other district, including Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Lucknow, have been witnessing 2-3 hours of additional power cuts. UPPCL managing director said that there is no departmental order as such for these districts but the corporation in an affidavit with the UP electricity regulatory commission (UPERC) maintained that round the clock power supply will be provided to these districts “because of VIP movements”.

In UP, the demand for power in April has reached an alarming figure of 11,000MW, almost 10 percent more than the corresponding last year, while the supply has remained between 8,000MW to 9,000MW.

Officials of Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (PVVNL) said that over the last few days, discoms have been able to supply just about 60 percent of the total power demand. The situation is expected to worsen in the months to come.

On one hand, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has said that it would purchase electricity to meet the crisis through the energy exchange and energy banking routes. While on the other hand, different power consumers’ forums across the state have become restive and lay the full blame on state-run discoms for not planning out advance mitigation measures. Besides power cuts, the residents are also unhappy about the poor customer service of state-run discoms.
