Property tax non-payers face criminal charges
Around 20,000 property owners from the South Delhi colonies like Green Park, Lajpat Nagar and Hauz Khas are to face criminal charges for not paying the property tax.
About 1000 notices were sent to property owners by the property tax department of South Delhi Corporation.
Around 30,000 properties in three of the four zones of the south Corporation that have been converted from residential to commercial status, according to sources.
Although the status has been changed, about 20000 properties at the time of assessment are still calculating the tax at residential rates. This is however, several times lower than the tax imposed on commercial properties. This will result in loosing several crores of revenue as property tax to the corporation. If found guilty, the defaulters can face up to seven years in prison.
