Pune: PMC issues “stop construction” orders to deal with water crisis

Building projects in Pune may be delayed because of a recent decision by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to ban all construction activity in the city till the revival of monsoon and a resultant improvement in water situation.

The decision by the PMC to stall construction activity to deal with water crisis may lead to losses to construction companies, due to delays in completing the building projects which are currently underway.

With regard to the PMC’s decision, city engineer Prashant Waghmare said that the PMC has issued orders to realty developers to “stop construction.” Describing the move as “inevitable,” Waghmare said that construction activity in the city will be allowed only after the rainfall conditions improve.

Waghmare said that a number of builders’ associations have been contacted by the civic administration to convey the “stop construction” message; and added that developers should refrain from using drinking water, bore wells and tankers for construction purposes till the ban is in place.

Waghmare also asserted that developers who violate the “stop construction” orders will be “liable for punishment as per the law.”

Meanwhile, reacting t the PMC’s directive to stall construction, Nitin Nyati – treasurer, CREDAI Pune Metro – said: “We understand the issue of water scarcity and hence most of the water used in construction process is recycled. We should be realistic as construction works cannot immediately close down. If necessary, the PMC should give builders some time for slowdown.”
